Private University Colleges
Private University Colleges in Alberta are classified in the Roles and Mandates Framework as Independent Academic Institutions. These institutions receive some public funding for the delivery of approved, credit degree programs, however they are independently governed, not-for-profit institutions.
Independent Academic Institutions
These institutions provide programming within a faith environment including liberal arts, science and education baccalaureate programs. They may offer graduate programming in niche areas and in areas that do not duplicate existing graduate program offerings. They may also conduct applied research and scholarly research activity.
All degree programs that are offered by private institutions in Alberta must be approved by the Minister of Advanced Education and Technology and are subject to the same stringent review processes as public institutions. Learn more about the Degree and Program Approval Process.
Note: Taylor University College and Seminary ceased its undergraduate educational offerings as of June 30, 2009 and subsequently was renamed Taylor College and Seminary. They no longer offer Ministerially approved degree programs.
