Provincial emergency management strengthened by new telecommunications system

Edmonton... Albertans will benefit from a state-of-the-art enhancement to the province's emergency response system that aims to bring a faster and more coordinated response to emergencies. The Alberta government is working with TELUS on a two-year pilot of a specially designed technology system that will better coordinate all levels of emergency response to major incidents.

The Institute for Biocomplexity and Informatics will be led by Dr. Stuart Kauffman, a scientist known around the world for his exceptional genetic theories, who has now moved to Alberta to work on research that could offer new ways to treat cancer.

New research funding to find BSE solutions

Edmonton... The Alberta government is committing $38-million to research on prions, the proteins best known for their link to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The Alberta Prion Science Initiative will build on the research already happening in the province, Canada and internationally to better understand how prions affect both animal and human health.

Alberta and Microsoft Corp. team up to deliver cutting edge software to new centres of excellence at Northern and Southern Alberta Institutes of Technology

Redmond... Microsoft Corp. and the Alberta government announced two new centres of excellence focused on cutting edge technologies specific to the Alberta manufacturing industry. The centres will help Alberta-based manufacturers achieve new levels of operational efficiency and competitiveness. Students at the centres will gain the expertise necessary to help Alberta's energy manufacturing sector reduce operational costs, improve customer service and gain a better understanding of globalization and outsourcing.

Innovative Partnership creating one of the world's largest folk music repositories

Santa Clara... Making extensive collections of folk and world music available to researchers everywhere is the goal of a new project called MuDoc, a collaboration involving the Government of Alberta, University of Alberta and Sun Microsystems. An agreement between the partners was signed during Minister Victor Doerksen's mission to California. The project will create a web-based multimedia repository that will link digitized audio, video, notes, images, and other music-related documents in a searchable database.
